Gardening with Autumn on its way, as the rain stopped for a couple of days we managed to get out in the garden and do a bit of work. With all the bad weather the garden has turned into a bit of a jungle.
We spent the first afternoon cutting back trees and bushes that have run riot and were starting to spread onto the road. There are a few natural springs nearby, one of which runs under our back garden, we were able to unblock some drains so hopefully the water will now run down there instead of down the road.
The second afternoon we tackled the courtyard outside of Bedroom 5 and it is now looking a bit more presentable. We moved the remainder of the log pile out to the store at the side of the house, disturbing quite a few lizards and a very brightly coloured frog. We felt guilty about destroying their home so left a few logs and some bark in a corner for them, so hopefully they will settle back in there.
We have a few rowan trees in the garden. I think we may be in for a harsh winter as they are laden with berries and the branches are drooping down with the weight of them. They will soon get stripped of the berries as the redwing, waxwing and fieldfare arrive.
The Woodland Trust has an interesting page about the rowan and its association with being protection against witches. It is considered unlucky to cut down a tree so we will give them a bit of a trim once the berries are all gone.
We’ve yet to tackle the side of our cottage and then the front garden. Looking at the weather forecast we are hopeful that we might be able to get it done towards the end of the week. That is if we can believe the weather report! It has been raining all day today but now there is a gap in the clouds and we are getting a beautiful sunset.
