For our Wedding Anniversary Adventures today we caught the Ember bus from the village down to Glasgow. It was our first time on the electric bus and we found it very comfortable. There were charging points on the back of the seat in front and plug sockets dotted about.
Once in Glasgow we hopped on the 77 bus which stopped outside of Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. The museum opened in 1901 and has 22 galleries where you can see art, animals, ancient Egypt and much more.
At 1pm there was an organ recital which resonated around the building. We didn’t recognise any of the tunes but it was very pleasant!
Sir Roger the Elephant, one of the main attractions, though impressive made me sad, he couldn’t have had a very happy life and came to an unfortunate end. We didn’t spend much time looking at the other animals. The spitfire ‘flying’ overhead was much more to our liking.
The Floating Heads by Sophie Cave were fun and we spent some time looking at all the different expressions. Some people have found them creepy but we liked the installation.
The Glasgow Boys Gallery was one of our favourites, some of the paintings were in quite dark shades however the paintings by Sir John Lavery were much brighter and I particularly liked his painting of Anna Pavlova.
The main reason for our visit was to see Salvador Dali’s ‘Christ of St John of the Cross’. The room was pretty crowded and we couldn’t get a proper look but it was still the highlight of our visit. Painted in 1951 it was bought by Glasgow Corporation in 1952 for £8,200, today it is valued conservatively at over £60 million. The Spanish of course would like to buy it back.
There was plenty to see and I’m sure we missed some galleries so we are going to go back and spend more time in our favourite areas and the missed ones.
