Ballachulish Quarry with a lake with thistles in the foreground

Quarry and Brecklet, Ballachulish

A lovely circular walk around the old Ballachulish slate quarry which is now home to many plant and animal species. Gather your breath and take your time to walk up the path at the side of the quarry. Enter the tree plantation and take a rest at the view point which offers great views up the loch. Carry on, on a slow descent through the trees and you will come across some ruins of old cottages. The path then reaches a track where if you wish you can take a wander to the left along the banks of the River Laroch and pass the pet cemetery until the path ends. Taking a right at the track drops you back down into the village past the two churches. During May/June there are beautiful gardens on the left which are full of colourful rhododendrons and azaleas. At the bottom of the hill turn right and you are back at Loanfern and a short walk brings you back to the house. You can of course take this walk in reverse if you’d rather have a gradual ascent.
