Walls of Ardchattan Priory

A Day Out

June 2014

This week we had our friend Sylvia visiting us from Germany and on Wednesday 11th June David let me off my duties and us girls were able to go out for the day.  It started off very wet so we were not very hopeful. We tried Cuil Bay first but it was just too wet to get out of the car.  However, as we drove towards Oban the skies began to clear and our next planned stop was Ardchattan Priory (take a left turn just before the Connel Bridge), the Priory is now a ruin but there are beautiful gardens to walk around and a very impressive house.

After a good photo stop we headed back in the direction of Ballachulish.  The sun was now out and it was lovely and warm.  Sylvia had very kindly bought us tickets for a tour around Castle Stalker which opens to the public only a couple of times a year.  We were picked up by boat and taken across the narrow strip of water.   We had a very interesting historical tour and got to see all the rooms, over four floors I think and up onto the battlements.   It is a lot smaller inside than you would have thought, due I guess to the walls being 9 feet thick.   It was great to see the castle up close and inside after many years of admiring it from the opposite shore.
